Are you Jewish?
Do you have Jewish roots? Are you an Ashkenazi? Are you a Levi or a Cohen?
A DNA test may help you to discover your Jewish roots. There are certain haplogroups that are indicative of Jewish ancestry. Additionally there may be a high percentage of jews in your genetic matches. This is also a strong indication of a jewish origin. By contacting your genetic matches you may be able to deepen your research.
Furthermore, there is a certain DNA-Profile called the "Cohen Modal-Haplotyp", because it appears repeatedly among the Jewish sub-group called the Cohanim. This haplotype is a clear indicator of Jewish ancestry.
The Jewish People, however, is not entirely genetically seperable. So no test can give you an unambiguous proof. Nevertheless a genealogical DNA test can confirm a jewish origin.
Even if you don't belong to one of the typical Jewish haplogroups, you could still have Jewish roots. By comparing your DNA-Profile with all other profiles in our databank (over 350,000), you will find persons whose profiles are genetically similar to yours ("genetic cousins"). If many of your genetic cousins are Jews, then there is a high probability that you have Jewish roots, too.
Is Judaism more than a religion? Is there a jewish Gene?
Ethnic groups who marry among themselves and for generations are genetically "linked". It is scientifically undisputed that there are genetic patterns that occur frequently in Jews. Jews have developed over the centuries a certain degree of genetic homogeneity that becomes visible in a DNA-test.
Recommendation for researching your Jewish roots
In order to analyze your Jewish origins maternally, we suggest the mtDNA premium test. To learn more about your paternal lineage, we recommend the Y-DNA premium test. We also offer combined tests which analyze maternal and paternal lineage. Herefore we recommend the Combi premium test. In addition, we recommend a FamilyFinder test, which indicates the proportion of Jewish origin in percentages. The FamilyFinder test is especially recommended when the Jewish ancestry is not in a purely paternal or purely maternal lineage.

What information do I receive in my report?
After the DNA analysis you receive a detailed report containing your primitive ancestors, region of origin and haplogroup. The report includes maps and detailed explanations (Sample report "online"). The iGENEA database is available free and for an unlimited period. Our large database provides you with the possibility of finding genetic cousins, i.e. people with whom you have common ancestors. By exchanging information such as family tree records with your genetic cousins, you extend your knowledge of the history of your family - faster and more precisely than ever before.
I am mainly interested in my lineage; to which people I belong.
A DNA genealogy test informs you about your true origin.
You can compare your DNA profile with other DNA profiles in the database, the largest of its kind in the world. On the basis of information from people who are genetically matched with you, you receive certainty about your maternal or paternal ancestry.
The result of a DNA test also identifies your haplogroup. Haplogroups can be thought of as huge branches of the human family tree. They show how population groups moved across the earth. Thus, they also define a geographical area. If haplogroups represent the branches of the human family tree, the haplotypes are the leaves.
That is, all haplotypes of a haplogroup are leaves of the same branch. If you now know your haplogroup, you know that you originate from e.g. Central Europe or South Asia. If you compare the origins of the people with whom you are genetically matched, you will find the specific geographic region from where you originate.
I am a genealogist and have already collected a lot of material. How can I benefit from such a test?
A DNA genealogy test can also be beneficial to experienced genealogists. Birth certificates, penalty orders and other documentation used for researching family trees were not always completed and issued correctly. In numerous cases, wars, disturbances or natural catastrophes have led to the destruction of such documentation. It is exactly here that a DNA genealogy test comes into its own.
DNA genealogy complements your traditional family research and in times when it appears that your research has reached an insurmountable barrier, takes you further.
DNA genealogy enables you to find "genetic cousins", i.e. people with whom you have shared ancestry. By exchanging information such as family tree records with your "genetic cousins", you extend your knowledge of the history of your family.
Test my DNA? How is that done?
A Mucus Sample suffices to get a sample of your DNA. Taking the sample is simple and painless and can be done at home. about the test
Genealogy . What is this?
A DNA genealogical test shows you the haplogroup (going back 60,000 years ago), the ancient tribe your ancestors belonged to and where your ancestors came from 40 generations ago, which takes you back to the 11th / 13th centuries. You receive information about the maternal and paternal lines.
DNA genealogy also allows you to locate "genetic cousins," i.e. persons who share a common ancestor with you. When you exchange information, like family trees, with your "genetic cousins",you expand your knowledge of your own family history.
What will these tests tell me?
Men have the possibility of researching their paternal lineage by means of their Y-Chromosome. The Y-Chromosome test enables you to find male relatives across the entire world due to your personal DNA profile. This test also gives information on the geographic region from which your male ancestors originate (more on the Y-Chromosome test). Females and males have the possibility of researching their maternal lineage by means of their Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The mtDNA test enables you to find female and male relatives across the entire world due to your personal mtDNA profile. This test also gives information on the geographic region from which your female ancestors originate (more on the mtDNA test).
What test options do I have?
The various tests and prices can be found here: Tests & Prices.
How do the results that I will receive look?
Your results are sent as a certificate and as an online access. You can view excerpts of example results here.
How can my paternal lineage be researched if I am a woman?
Females cannot have a Y-DNA test carried out due to the fact that they do not have a Y-Chromosome. In order to bypass this, you can research your paternal lineage by having a male relative from this paternal line tested. This could be, for example: your father, brother, half brother on the father’s side, uncle (brother of the father), cousin (son of the uncle) etc. If you are unsure of which relative you should ask, call us per telephone or send an E-Mail to info@igenea.com.
What does a DNA genealogy test cost?
A DNA genealogy test begins at EUR 99.00 or CHF 159.00. For more detailed information, please click Tests & Prices.
What does the lab do with the actual DNA sample once the test is completed?
It remains in the laboratory for 25 years. This means that you can order additional tests without the need for a new sample collection. Your DNA sample is marked with an identification number and cannot be connected with your name. You can instruct us to destroy your sample at any time simply by sending us an E-Mail. The samples will then be irrevocably destroyed.
What is the position with discretion and data protection?
Discretion and data protection is very important to us. iGENEA works under swiss law on data protection. You can have your data removed at any time it required. Our partner FamilyTreeDNA work under "Save Harbor", the convention on data protection between the EU and the USA.
Can my DNA profile be removed from the database at all times?
Yes. Send us an E-Mail or call us if you would like your profile to be erased. The data will then be immediately and irrevocably removed.
What % of Jews carry the Cohanim gene?
From studies performed at cemeteries about 5% of Jews appear to be Cohanim. Furthermore, in a study conducted in Israel where people were asked at random if they were Cohanim, Levites or Israel, of those answering Israel, about 3% tested positive for the Cohanim gene.
