The Brimberry Surname Project
The progenitors of the BRIMBERRY FAMILY in the U.S. were Matthias Brimberry (1736-c.1810) and Mary Anderson (1748-after 1785). Of pure Swedish stock, they were married March 22, 1766 at Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church in Wilmington, Del. DNA project participants will receive a detailed description of their Swedish ancestors dating to the early 1600's. Matthias was the son of Christiern Brunberg (1684-1752)and Maria Peterson (1699-1750) who also married at Old Swedes Church in 1719. Mary Anderson was the daughter of Peter Anderson (1705-aft.1787) and his second wife Catherina Lynam 1719-aft.1787). Christiern Brunberg was born in the province of Halland, Sweden, and came to America about 1714. In Swedish, the letter g at the end of his surname has a y sound hence various changes in spelling. Maria Peterson, wife of Christiern Brunberg, was the daughter of Matthias Peterson and Elizabeth Justis. Maria was descended from one of the first two Swedish families to settle in New Sweden in 1640. Matthias and Mary's sons form the seven branches of the Brimberry family tree: 1. Peter Brimberry (1767-c.1831, m. Dicey Walker) 2. Jacob Brimberry (1768-c.1823, m. Jane Cunningham) 3. Joseph Brimberry (1770-1820/30, wife unknown) 4. John Brimberry (1772-1830/40, m. Agness Beethe) 5. Isaac Brimberry (1775-1847, m. Mary Beethe) 6. William Brimberry (1778-c.1836, m. Catherine Duggins) 7. Samuel Brimberry (1785-1837, m. Mary Jones)In some respects, it has been easier to trace Matthias and Mary's Swedish ancestors than the footsteps of their sons as they moved about the frontier to NC, VA, KY, TN, IL, IN, SC, LA, AR & TX.The objectives of this surname project are: 1. Support or supplement traditional genealogy. 2. Eliminate or confirm the relationship of individuals or lines. 3. Focus research towards related families. 4. Confirm variant surnames as part of the same family. 5. Confirm two known adoption lines.
