In Europe the name is found predominately in the U.K. One of the earliest known written records containing the name Clinkscales appears ca. 1600 in Coldingham, Scotland. In North America, the name is found in early 1700 when Adam Clinkscales is believed to have emigrated from Scotland to the British Colony of Maryland. The book The Clinkscales of America, compiled by Wilda B. Wing, attributes the origin of several hundred U.S. families to this Clinkscales.
