The Filgate/Felgate/Fiel Surname Project

Description:

Any variant of the FILGATE, FELGATE, FIELDGATE surname, worldwide. Do these families have common roots or are there mulitple family origins? In England, extensive research on our surname has been done by Don Felgate who says the name may have originated in the now non-existent hamlet of FALGATE in the county of Norfolk which has been swallowed up by the town of Potter Heigham. The only visible sign of the old hamlet is a public house called, The Falgate. Nearly all early references to the family name occur in Norfolk and refer to deFALGATE, de FALDGATE, or atteFALGATE.Of special interest is the ancestry of James FELGATE,born 1791, Ipswich, Suffolk Co., Eng., son of James Felgate and Elizabeth Pack. While in service with the British Army in Canada,1818-1829, James married Mary Thompson, born 1797,County Queens, Ireland. Fours sons were born to them: Samuel, Richard, James and John. Descendants of Richard and James FILGATE live in Canada and the United States.
