The Hathcoat Surname Project

Description:

This project's goal is to determine the relatedness of the Hathcoat/Hathcock/Heathcock surname and the 18 variant spellings found to date. We believe that many of us are descended from Thomas in England who emigrated to America in 1635. However, we also have good evidence that although our surname came to America with Thomas, our Y-chromosome did not. Our haplotype, M-2, is typical of relatively recent African origin, whereas several contemporary Heathcock men who live in England have a very different haplotype. We do not know, and probably will never know, how the Hathcock surname became joined with the African M-2 Y-DNA, but it appears to have resulted from a ?non-paternal event? that occurred shortly after Thomas Hathcock arrived in 1635.
