The Hughson Surname Project

Description:

Do All Hughson families have a common ancestor? ____________ The Hughson Family is a very old name in America, there were a number of Hughson?s in the Revolutionary War, mostly in New York. In 1800 there were 16 Hughson entries in the United States Census with all but one living in New York State. By 1850 there were 177 Hughson men listed in the Census, with 104 living in New York State and the vast majority being born in America. Between 1820 and 1850, 21 men named Hughson immigrated to the United States, 15 came from New Brunswick, Canada, 5 from Liverpool, England and 1 from Marseille, France. There are many variations in spelling of the Hughson name, as you will find if you try to trace the family in the historical records. I have done some research in New York State and am particularly interested in the Hughson Families that resided in Onondaga County, New York before the Civil War. There are many Hughson descendants living in Canada, and it may be that many of the early Hughsons in America immigrated to Canada before coming to the United States. Hughsons from around the world are welcome to join the project. It is clear that the American Hughson anscestors are most likely from the British Isles. We now have seven project members representing 5 distinct family lines, two lines from the Shetland Islands, one from Ireland, one from New York (European Ancestry no yet defined) and our British Hewison line. Hopefully we can tie the American and Canadian families and the British Isles families to some common ancestors.
