The Lindo Surname Project
The surname Lindo originated in Spain. Antonio Rodriquez Lindo, a merchant described as a Christiano Nueva, was born in Badajoj, Spain in 1637. He left Spain when he was twelve and settled in Lisbon, Potugal, where he was arrested for Judaism in 1660. His brother Lorenco Rodriquez Lindo and his wife were seized by the Inquisition in the Canary Islands and imprisoned without a trial. Antonio and Lorenco were the sons of Joao Rodriquez Lindo, a Converso merchant. The Converso Lindos who left Spain and Portugal in flight from the Inquisition appear to have divided into two main migratory streams. The London branch stems from Lorenco who later changed his name to Isaac. Those who migrated to Jamaica in the mid-eighteenth century trace their origins to Alexander Lindo of Venice, Italy. The goal of this DNA project is to help Lindos with their genealogy -- finding out which branch of the above Lindos they fall into, or if they come from another different group of Lindos.
