The Meriwether Surname Project
The Meriwether DNA Project aims to take advantage of genealogical DNA tests to help pursue Meriwether history research. By determining the genetic signature of each Meriwether family line, it is possible to tell which Meriwether family lines are related and which are not. Meriwether, Merriwether, Meriweather, Merriweather, Merryweather, Merrywether, Mereweather, Merewether, Maryweather, and any other spelling variations are welcome to join the project. Only males have Y-chromosomes, so only male Meriwether (or variant) can participate. If you are female, you can have a male Meriwether (or variant) relative submit a sample for your line. To participate meaningfully, testees should share their direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known Meriwether (or variant), as a pedigree (excluding living persons). The Meriwether DNA Project was founded in 2004 and now has 30 participants, from the US, Canada, England, Italy, and New Zealand. The Meriwether Society, Inc. sponsored this project, hoping that DNA tests will trace the origins of the original immigrant in the colonies, Nicholas Meriwether, who came to Virginia ca 1650's. The Society is interested in linking Nicholas Meriwether to his (now unknown) parents in the UK, possibly in Wiltshire. We warmly welcome Meriwether, Merryweather, etc. from everywhere to join our project. Note that we have a Sponsorship Fund that can sometimes assist with the cost of DNA tests for newcomers to our project. To join our project, you can order a DNA collection kit by selecting a kit to order from the choices shown near the bottom of this webpage, or contact the project's volunteer coordinator DNA@MeriwetherSociety.org and I?ll be happy to assist you.
