The Montelius Surname Project
Frederick Marcus Montelius arrived by ship in Philadelphia in 1773 and later lived in Reamstown, Pennsylvania. Family lore is that he came from Upper Saxony. As an adult, Johann Montelius Jr. of Edebo, Sweden, worked as a civil servant in the Swedish possession of West Pomerania in the city of Stralsund which is now part of Germany. West Pomerania was part of an old administrative area called Upper Saxony. Johann Jr. lived there at the right time and was the right age to be the father of Frederick Marcus who was born 25 Oct 1752. But was he the father? It appears that Johann Jr. never married and we can find no documentation connecting the two.Due to the lack of documentary evidence, we are relying on a Y chromosome 12 marker DNA test of two living male descendents of Frederick Marcus with the surname Montelius and two living male descendents of Johann Montelius Sr., also with the surname Montelius. Others surnamed Montelius are welcome to join this project.
