The Speigner Surname Project
Description:
The surname Speigner is believed to have originated in central Europe prior to 1700 in the area that is now Austria. Today, most Speigner families in Europe live in Upper Austria. The first Speigners known to have come to America are John George Speigner, his wife and 6 children who arrived in Charles Town in 1753. The family settled on 400 acres provided by a land grant from King George II of England. The land was located in Saxe-Gotha Township in what later became Orangeburgh District in present day Lexington County, South Carolina. Several variations in the spelling of the name occurred around the time of the Revolutionary War with Spigener and Spigner being the most prevalent. Descendants migrated throughout South Carolina, and in 1817, began migrating through Georgia to Alabama and other gulf states. Over the past 250 years the name has taken several different spellings, but it is believed that most of those listed here are related. The objectives of this project are to: 1. Identify others who are related. 2. Prove or disprove theories regarding ancestors. 3. Determine a location for further research. 4. Validate existing research.
