The vanHemert Surname Project
Description:
Collecting yDNA samples for the van Hemert surname worldwide to further research in both genealogy and human origins is the Project goal. In 1811, the French emperor Napoleon obliged all Dutch citizens without surnames to take one. Although some families had surnames before this, the use of patronymics was common. The prefix van and a place name may indicate a member of he nobility but not always. Op-(upper) and Nederhemert(lower) are small population centers in the provincial area of Gelderland bordering the River Waal, a main branch of the Rhine River in the Netherlands. You find the Van prefix often capitalized in English speaking countries and indexed under that prefix.
