The WINKEY Surname Project
Description:
The Winkey Family Genealogy Project seeks to use DNA analysis to enable Winkey families to determine if they share a common ancestor with other Winkey families; to explore our diverse ethnic admixtures (African, Amerindian, European), and to uncover our rich genealogical and anthropological history. One Winkey branch can be traced back to Thornton & Rebecca Winkey, who were probably born in the late 1700?s or the beginning of the 1800?s and are at least four to six generations removed from the Winkey?s today. All Winkey?s are welcomed to join regardless of race, religion, culture, creed or ethnicity/nationality. The ultimate goal is to combine the paper trail, anecdotal history and DNA evidence to tell a more succinct story about our shared surname and ancestry. Please note that this project is open to all derivatives of the name (i.e. Winkey, Winkie, Wenke, Key, etc.) and related surnames inextricably intertwined with the Winkey family: (1) Snyder/James/Washington of Madison & Orange Cos., VA; NJ, & PA. (2) Jackson of Louisa County, VA; Pennsylvania; NJ, NY. (3) Williams/Gaskin of Fauquier & Loudoun Cos., VA, and (4) Shipley/Wycoff of Readington & Bridgewater, NJ.
