Evaluating iGENEA DNA Test: Unravelling the Surname Barth's Historical Lineage

Family name Barth

Embarking on a journey of self-discovery, I recently explored my roots through an iGENEA DNA test. This journey allowed me to understand the comprehensive technicalities behind DNA testing processes and illuminate a new perspective on my surname—Barth.

Diving into a deeper understanding of my heritage, I decided to opt for a DNA test conducted by iGENEA. The experience has enlightened me about the technical intricacies behind the test and allowed me to uncover fascinating insights into my surname, Barth.

iGENEA uses highly advanced next-generation sequencing techniques, offering three testing options: Basic, Premium, and Expert. For more extensive analysis, I chose the Expert Plan, which analyses the autosomal DNA, paternal Y-DNA, and maternal mtDNA. These tests also include a geographical analysis of the ancestors and a PDF result.

The autosomal DNA provides information about both maternal and paternal lineage, including distant relatives up to the 6th generation. The Y-DNA test covers my male lineage, tracing the patrilineal ancestry by examining the Y-chromosome, passed down from father to son. The mtDNA test evaluates the mitochondrial DNA, inherited solely from the mother, which traces the matrilineal ancestry.

Since accuracy is vital in these tests, iGENEA employs Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) and Short Tandem Repeat (STR) techniques for the accurate tracing of genealogical lineage. Furthermore, the test results are rechecked for any possible errors to ensure maximum reliability. The results have an impressive accuracy rate of 99.7%.

Using these methods, I discovered a fascinating revelation about my surname, Barth. This last name, common in regions of Germany and Switzerland, was prevalent among people who worked as religious clerics in the early ages. The name appears to have derived from the Aramaic word 'bar-Timai', meaning 'son of Timaus'. It was exhilarating to learn that the surname was associated with religious and intellectual authorities.

Overall, the DNA test by iGENEA has not only enhanced my understanding of genetics and heritage tracing but also deepened my connection with my surname, introducing me to an unfamiliar side of the Barth heritage.

B. Barth
