Unveiling the Origins and Historical Patterns of the Pedersen Lineage Using iGENEA DNA Test

Recently, I undertook an enlightening journey into my genetic ancestry via an iGENEA DNA test. The insights bestowed on me through the test offered a comprehensive look into the origins and meaning of my surname “Pedersen,” indicating deep ties with Northern Europe, Western Europe, and a marked Viking influence. The results revealed fascinating interconnections between my ancestors, their geographical origins, and the compelling history linked to my lineage.
After my recent ancestry exploration via the iGENEA DNA test, I received some incredibly fascinating insights into my genetic heritage and my surname “Pedersen.” The test shed light on the geographic and ethnic origins intertwined with the Pedersen lineage, reflecting a history rich in diversity and migration.
As per my examination, the surname Pedersen is of Scandinavian origin. It is a patronymic surname, meaning it's derived from the father's name. Specifically, it signifies 'son of Peder,' an equivalent of Peter in English. The distribution of my Y-DNA haplogroup, indicative of my direct paternal lineage, provided strong associations with Northern Europe, with clear ties to Denmark and Norway.
The test result revealed that my genetic origins belong to the haplogroup R1b, which is widespread in Western Europe. Fascinatingly, the R1b lineage is numerously present amongst the men in Ireland, Scotland, and the West Coast of France, and then diminishing towards the east of Europe. This suggests a historical westward migration from Scandinavia – a definite Viking footmark!
Moreover, particular genetic markers denote the partial presence of Celtic DNA in my pedigree. It suggests that someone in my ancestry mingled with Celtic groups, further solidifying the connection with Western Europe.
The iGENEA test is quite sensitive to maternal DNA influences as well. The mitochondrial DNA test, representing my mother's lineage, rendered my participation in the haplogroup H – predominantly found in Europe, implying that my maternal heritage is heavily European.
Finally, autosomal DNA analysis, which makes up the majority of my genetic makeup, depicts genetic influences from both ancient and recent ancestors. It revealed additional connections to Western and Central Europe, underlining a complex ancestry interplay and migrations over centuries.
