Are you a Basque?

A DNA test by iGENEA provides you with evidence of whether you have Basque roots. Based on your specific genetic characteristics, we can identify your origins and state from which line the Basque descent is (paternal, maternal or both lines). In addition, your profile is compared with more than 700,000 people in our database. If we find a genetic match, i.e., people with whom you correspond to a certain degree, then you have the opportunity to contact these people and intensify your family research.

Basques –also genetically a unique people

The Basques don't have just a unique history and language, but the most recent studies have shown that they are genetically quite different from both the Spaniards and the French.

The origin of the Basques is still debated today, because a linguistic analysis is not possible. The Basque language evinces no commonalities with any other European language. Some experts believe that they migrated to Europe with the first Cro-Magnons and so belong to the first European peoples.

Other experts see a relationship with the Iberians (Theory:Basquo-Iberians). Yet another theory traces the origins of the Basques back to the immigration of the Indo-Europeans or the Vandals and Alans.

Today, more than 60% of Spanish Basques identify themselves exclusively as Basques and not as Spaniards or French, while a mere 2% identify themselves as Spaniards, and 4% as French, and not as Basques.

Genetically, Basques, Spaniards, and Frenchmen are very strongly differentiated from each other, so that a genetic differentiation between the groups is possible. The Spanish and French Basques belong to another haplogroup than their neighbors. By examining certain DNA sequences, we can analyze the genetic origin of the Basques.

"Being Basque" can be defined not only by language or by having Basque ancestors, but can also be genetically defined, and thereby answer many questions.

Researching Basque origins

Carriers of the same or similar genetic characteristics are summarised by haplogroup. Haplogroups represent the various branches of Homo sapiens and show the roots and movement of our ancestors. Thus, belonging to certain haplogroups is also an indication of Basque descent.

Clarification of other ancient tribes by iGENEA

By Ancient tribes, we refer to peoples from ancient times who are defined not only by their own language, culture and history, but also by their own DNA profile. An origins analysis by iGENEA determines your Ancient tribe by means of your haplogroup and genetic profile. The result refers roughly to the period between 900 BC and 900 AD.
