From Spain to Ireland

Paul David Hewson, better known as Bono, was born in Dublin on May 10, 1960. His father, Brendan Robert Hewson, was a primary school teacher and his mother, Iris, a church employee. His father, grandparents and uncles on his mother's side and great-grandparents on his father's side are all from Dublin.

Music accompanied him from an early age. His father played guitar and his mother loved gospel music. Bono attended Iona House, a Catholic elementary school. At age 14, he joined his first band, Feedback, as a singer. Burdened by the murder of one of his classmates in a 1975 robbery and divorce from his parents, he invented his stage name: Bono.

After the death of his father in 1976, he formed the band "The Hype", which a year later changed its name to U2. As Bono member of the band, various successes were achieved and U2 became one of the most successful and world-renowned bands. Bono recorded five studio albums with U2, including "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby".

Bono has received numerous honors for his political activities, including a Fellowship and Citation from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Jammys Humanitarian Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a German Golden Camera for music. He is also known for his signature sunglasses.

In addition to music, Bono is also involved in social and political activism. He is the co-founder of the campaign "DATA", an association of activists who work for a better world. He regularly publishes articles and participates in numerous demonstrations. Bono is the chairman of the "ONE Campaign", a charity that works to fight extreme poverty in Africa.

Bono has also started a family. With his wife, Alison Stewart, he has four children: Jordan (born 1989), Memphis Eve (born 1991), Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q. (born 2001) and John Abraham (born 2004). Bono and his wife also had an adoption through which he had another daughter, Sian (born 1982).

Bono is a charismatic, passionate and uncompromising musician, activist and family man. For over thirty years, he has proven through his music, voice and actions that people can make a difference by fighting for those who face little justice. He is a role model for generations and continues to impress us.

Bono's maternal lineage is from Ireland. His mtDNA test, conducted back in 2007 for the Genographic Project, shows that His prehistoric ancestors were based in Spain.

Bono belongs to haplogroup V in his maternal line.
