The Broom plant was used to make the Besom, the word Broom used to describe the plant can be found going way back even further than Shakespeare's reference to the plant besom many times in his writings. Interestingly the first Plantagenet king from Anjou in France, ( The family held the English throne from 1154, with the accession of Henry II, until 1485, when Richard III died.) Was known to wear a sprig of Broom into battle, the Plantagenet name derived from the plants more formal description as Planta Genista,
The Broom was found in many regions perhaps this could be where Loch Broom gets its name as being a place where the Broom grew. An early McBroom could have been the cultivator or harvester or seller or even a resident of where the Broom was found. The Broom plant held significant place in the early culture for its spiritual and medicinal standings along with its tactile use. Still the question remains for many of us McBroom's, where are our origins.
